Capote

Capote, Hepburn and Monroe

I start reading the book in the basement of Dymocks on Collins St, Melbourne. Immediately  I am taken back to the apartment with Audrey Hepburn, her dressing gown endowing her narrow frame with fluffy curves. Apparently Capote wanted Marilyn Monroe to play Holly Golightly.  Perhaps a silk kimono would have adorned her more voluptuous figure.  Men knocking on Marilyn’s door would have been slightly different don’t you think?  Lighter not in weight but cynicism.  Surely they would be drenched in wit and charm, oozing fun and filth, whipping Miss Monroe into a frenzy of squeals.  Marilyn would have added a slight (frosting) or icing sugar to the scenes,  whilst Hepburn’s angular frame was exactly what the book portrays, this poking and prodding of every character and their traits.  Marilyn was probably just too soft and fluffy.  I wish I could watch that version alas it will only ever play in my head, not on the big screen.

It hits me immediately as I start to read that Holly was never real, I wonder if Holly is Capote’s anima.  Rusty Trawler; is that his version of himself?  Do we all paint our self portraits with darker colours than necessary?  Perhaps Rusty is someone who betrayed him, or maybe he truly existed.  Sometimes the strangest characters are real, sitting right in front of you or even staring back from the reflection in the mirror.

I think this author is my new obsession. I needed to drift away from my Tolstoy/Steinbeck phase and Capote seems to fit the bill nicely. Not dark like Tolstoy, or black and white like Steinbeck. Capote’s writing is sepia, shades and shadows implied and encouraged.  Secret scenes and sunbeams occasionally floating through the air.

I can’t wait to carry on reading and find more sides of Capote in his work.  In Cold Blood will be my next read, why do writers go looking for dark in others, in ourselves and at the bottom of bottles?

Nailing Yourself to the Cross

Publication

front cover proof one

My book is to be released into the world imminently for anyone to read and so it is not surprising that I feel slightly vulnerable.   My teacher told me; ‘it’s good because it’s authentic’. I hope people don’t nail me to a cross for what I have written because yep it’s pretty authentic!  When I sent my ‘Meta Data’ sheet off to the publisher this week I don’t mind admitting I felt just a little bit sick with nerves.  That just about to get up and talk to an audience sick, quite appropriate that next week I will be attending a ‘speaking’ course then. I may as well get all this nervousness out-of-the-way.

For My Chinese Reading Friends — writingspark.net

Sharks & Lovers I was very fortunate recently when a wonderful friend offered to translate my first book into Chinese. At the weekend as I set up my Writing Spark website I was getting hits from China. I have never had any interest from China on my Frankie Banks website and I know some sites are blocked, so although […]

Cover to Cover

The Front Cover

I’m sure I could do hours of research and spend lots of money and time on finding the best colours, fonts and design.  That is a designers job, however I am a writer and writers have to go with their instinct, rightly or wrongly.  So here is my first proof of a front cover, when I saw it something said yes to me.  I’m sure it will change slightly but right now I’m happy.  For anyone wanting to have a go at a front cover or even just customising photo’s I used picmonkey.com and it was very easy!

Powerful Vulnerability

Isn’t it beautiful when someone unexpectedly shows you their vulnerability?

We can hide away within the chambers of our mind or we can choose to be open to ourselves and others.

Is vulnerability really a weakness? Surely if accepted and open it only produces power.

So pick up your pen, open your lap top, dig out that journal, find that post-it-note and clarity will be yours. It really is that simple and doesn’t cost a penny!

Ready to Roll

My Book is Ready

Finally after a year of Synchronicity, Submission and Skinny Dipping I am ready for my book to be published.  It is quite a strange feeling I don’t mind admitting.  I have had some very good advice from people that have already had a sneak peak and I thank them all enormously.  I have edited the content so many times but last weekend I picked up my working copy and realised I was trying to improve a sentence that was actually ok to begin with.  I am not Jane Austen however romantic my notions and my book is not a  masterpiece. However if it makes anyone smile, smirk, laugh, cry or even just wiggle with the uncomfortable truth I know I did my job well.

Flash Fiction

Fiction In 100 Words

There are many flash fiction websites, so I decided to try my hand. What a great way to make every word count. Writing thousands of words can be so much easier, you have room to breath. In 100 words, every sentence needs to count every word needs to be presice. This is my first attempt;

Dark Inspiration

Harold Pinter and his Dark World

When I picked up The Home Coming from my book shelf it was actually to show a client how their work would look in print.  It was just the number of words, not the content that was similar. Sometimes hard copy can be inspiring when your work seems only ever to be on the computer screen.
